From neighbourhood to housing estate
Before the regulation of the Danube between 1870 and 1875, this area was shaped by wetlands, gardens and waterways. Since 1899, the street has carried the name of writer and landscape painter Adalbert Stifter. Brigittenau became a separate Viennese district in 1900.
The housing estate at numbers 23–31 was built between 1955 and 1957. Today it contains 404 flats, 20 stairwells and 17 commercial premises. Its buildings feature reliefs by Karl Prantl, “Crystalline and Vegetative Forms”, and Hermann Valenta, “Boys Playing the Flute”.
Historical information: Wiener WohnenOur family’s story
According to family tradition, these premises once housed a sweet shop and a taxidermist. The coffeehouse has been in our family for more than 25 years.
What remains is a place to come together — and stories passed from one generation to the next.
